A lung tumor is an abnormal rate of cell division or cell death in lung tissue or in the airways that lead to the lungs. Types of benign lung tumors include hamartomas, adenomas and papillomas. In almost all cases, benign lung tumors require no treatment, but your doctor will probably monitor your tumor for changes.

How is it performed?

Your surgeon will make several small surgical cuts over your chest wall. A videoscope (a tube with a tiny camera on the end) and other small tools will be passed through these cuts. Then, your surgeon may remove part or all of your lung, drain fluid or blood that has built up, or do other procedures.

How long does it take to recover from a lung operation?

Expect to stay in the hospital for 2 to 7 days after lung cancer surgery. The hospital stay for open surgery is longer than it is for VATS. Lung cancer surgery is a big operation. Once you're home from the hospital, it can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months for you to fully recover.

Do lungs grow back after surgery?

No, the lungs can't regenerate. You can take out 75% to 80% of the liver and it will regenerate, but not the lungs. After a lobectomy, your mediastinum (a space in the thorax in the middle of the chest) and diaphragm will shift a little, so there won't be a space left where the lobe was taken out.
